    Social responsibility practice in Indian organizations presems a mixed picture. There are so many organizations which have contributed a lot for the up lift of the society. On the other hand, many businesses organization do not look beyond their immediate profit’s objective. As the economic conditions of the country had changed considerable, the organization are not able to take the fullest advantage of the economic conditions like shortages, ignorance and of general public and general seller’s market. TISCO and social responsibility:

    TISCO was the first company of the country to conduct social audit to find out the extent to which it is discharging its social obligations. The social responsibility of TISCO is reflected by its mission which is – to strengthen India's industrial base through increased productivity, effective utilization of manpower and material resources and continued application of modern scientific managerial methods as well as through systematic growth in keeping with national aspiration. Guided by its basic philosophy. The company believes in discharging its responsibility towards shareholders, employees, customer as under.

Social responsibility towards community:

1. Consumers:

    The company has adopted the policy of fair pricing and distribution of steel. Though there has been continuous storage of steel, the company never indulged in unfair trade practices. To ensure quality, the company has very rigid quality control system.

2. Shareholder:

    An attempted is made to reward the share holders suitably. The company could not distribute dividends when there was control over the aspect but later, the shareholder have got their due.

3. The city development:

    The company has development the plant site, that is, Jamshedpur, into a full fledge city with adequate provision of housing, health and conservancy, medial services and relating amenities.

4. Employer-Employee relations:

    These are of very high older; workers are given every opportunity to voice through their recognized union. In fact, the union is encouraged to take up the causes for improving employer-employee relationships.

5. Pollution control:

    This is of very high order so that there is no pollution problem in any part of the work place to in the city.

6. Rural development Programmer:

    Under this category, the has undertaken these programmer agriculture and crop setting up of training centers of allied vacation such as dairy, peltry farming, piggery and goat breeding, establishment of village industries and imparting training in those industries.

7. Community Development and social welfare:

    To under take various programmer the company has created separate department under the charge of chief social services manager. Various programmer under this category include operations of community development centers, welfare of Adivasis, youth clubs etc.

8. Obligation to society:

    To company has undertaken programmer like small pox eradication, flood, relief draught and cyclone relief in Orissa, relief work in cyclones in cyclone reliefs in Orissa, relief work om cyclone in Andra Pradesh, relief work during civil disturbances in Bihar, and other similar activities.

ITC and Social Responsibility:

    The company has undertaken various programmer to fulfill its obligation to various constituents; followings are the social responsibilities exercised by company towards different groups.
